The importance of railroads to the growth and expansion
of the United States is a compelling story. We all share a genuine interest in this
all-encompassing industry, which has woven an iron and steel path across the face of the
nation. It was this interest in preserving what lay ahead that, in 1935, inspired a group of rail historians to form the National Railway Historical Society. From fewer than 40 persons, the NRHS has grown to include over 20,000 men and women of all ages and professions in each an every state and many foreign countries, making it the nations largest rail historical Society. The Baltimore Chapter, chartered in 1936, is a non-profit and educational group dedicated to enhancing your enjoyment, knowledge of and involvement with railroading in an around Baltimore where the nations first common carrier railroad, "The B&O," started. If you share our interest in trains and railroading, then we think our organization is for you. While our members have widely varied tastes in trains, they all share a deep commitment to the preservation, restoration, and operation of railroad equipment. Foremost in all our activities is the chance to meet new people and make new friends. Our monthly meetings bring us together to share stories and news, to reminisce, and to plan future club events. We have movies, slide shows, or guest speakers every month. In short, we provide a great opportunity to socialize and do some good old-fashioned armchair railroading. The Baltimore Chapter of the NRHS meets on the second Monday of each month, at 8 oclock PM, at the Baltimore Streetcar Museum, 1911 Falls Road, two blocks from the Amtrak Station and adjacent to the B&O Belt Line crossing the Jones Falls Valley. Membership is open to all. Other activities of the Chapter include railroading shows, Chapter Library, museum visits, photo sessions, and railfan excursions on mainline and short line railroads behind diesels, as well as steam engines.
Back in 1935, the founders of our society recognized the need to preserve and promote railroading nationwide. The need still exists and you can be a part of our efforts. Photography or preservation riding or running trains reading or researching history theres something for you in the Baltimore Chapter. We invite you to join us in this fascinating and rewarding world of railroading. |
